Video Visitation Program
Effective January 30, 2010, the Department of Corrections began its expansion of the Video Visitation Program. Video Visitation is a way for families to meet with their imprisoned family or friends without having to invest the time and money in traveling long distances to correctional facilities.
Steps to have a video visit
- An inmate has to be eligible according to the following standards:
- Security Level 1, 2, 3 — no restrictions
- Security Level 4 and 5 — 6 months infraction free
- Red Onion:
- Segregation — 12 months infraction free
- Progressive housing — 6 months infraction free
- The inmate has to initiate the visitation process established by the prison.
- The inmate fills out an application packet, and mails it to his family or friend.
- The family or friend has to mail the application with the fee to the appropriate Visitor Center (see list below) in order to schedule a video visit.
- The Visitor Center sends the name of the visitor back to the facility to insure accurate information and schedule the date and time.
- The prison confirms the information, date and time.
- The Visitor Center contacts the family or friend and confirms date and time of the visit.
Fees
- $15 for a 30 minute visit
- $30 for a 60 minute visit
This is a minimal fee to cover costs for the non-profit agencies only, and does not go to the Virginia Department of Corrections.
